마크 카니 캐나다 총리와 군사·국방 비밀정보보호 협정의 사실상 타결을 선언하는 「안보·국방 공동성명」을 발표했습니다.

대한민국은 캐나다와 FTA를 체결한 인태 최초의 국가이며, 이번 공동성명 발표로 정상급 안보·국방 공동성명을 발표한 첫 인태 국가라는 기록까지 새로 세웠습니다. 외교, 안보, 방산 분야에서 더욱 긴밀한 전략적 협력을 약속하게 되어 매우 뜻깊습니다.

양국 간 교류협력 잠재력은 매우 큽니다. 에너지, AI 등 미래지향적 협력과 더불어 시청각 공동제작 협정 추진 등 문화·인적 교류 활성화 방안에 대해서도 함께 논의했습니다.

차기 잠수함 수주 등 방산 협력으로 캐나다 국방 현대화에 기여하겠다는 뜻을 밝히며, 카니 총리가 거제 조선소를 방문해 세계적 수준의 한국 조선 역량을 직접 확인하게 되어 기쁘다고 전했습니다.

앞으로도 우리 양국은 민주주의 가치를 바탕으로, 한반도 및 세계 평화와 안정을 위해 굳건한 우방으로서 함께 협력하며 나아갈 것입니다.

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada and I announced the conclusion of substantive negotiations on the Agreement on the Protection of Military and Defence Classified Information.

The Republic of Korea was the first Indo-Pacific nation to sign an FTA with Canada, and with today’s announcement, we have now become the first Indo-Pacific country to issue a joint statement on security and defense with Canada at the leaders’ level. This marks a meaningful milestone in our commitment to deepen strategic cooperation across diplomacy, security, and defense industries.

The potential for cooperation and exchanges between our two countries is vast. Alongside future-oriented partnerships in energy and AI, we also discussed ways to boost cultural and people-to-people exchanges, including the pursuit of a audiovisual co-production agreement.

I expressed Korea’s intention to contribute to Canada’s defense modernization through defense industry collaboration—such as in next-generation submarine procurement project. I also said to Prime Minister Carney that I was pleased he visited the Geoje shipyard, where he witnessed firsthand the world-class capabilities of Korea’s shipbuilding industry.

Going forward, Korea and Canada will continue to work together as strong partners, grounded in our shared democratic values, for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and around the world.
